Harmony Cafe, Georgetown

We've mentioned this place in our DC Eating Out Guide, but Harmony Cafe in Georgetown lately re-captured our interest when we were in the area. There's a lot to love about Harmony Cafe: you can get a vegetarian/vegan version of almost everything, it's nearby a ton of shops, a movie theatre, and gorgeous waterfront, and--especially for Georgetown--it's pretty cheap. The one drawback is that on weekend evenings it becomes full of Georgetown students during the school year, and service slows down because they have a small staff. However, if you go for an early dinner, you practically have the restaurant to yourself.

Crispy tofu tomato sauce from Harmony Cafe
We stopped by here the other day after shopping at Buffalo Exchange next door (where we buy most of our clothing these days... somehow, recycled jeans fit me better than new jeans?) We usually order the crispy shiitake as an appetizer, but this time we went with the satay tofu. It wasn't as good as the shiitake, but the peanut satay sauce was good and the tofu was crispy. For our meal, we ordered Hunan Beef and Crispy Tofu Tomato Sauce. I'm glad we ordered these two together--the tofu tomato dish would have been too sweet on its own, and the hunan was nice and spicy with a good amount of vegetables. Both of them really satisfied the craving for Chinese carry-out and filled us without overstuffing. Harmony Cafe isn't the only vegan option in Georgetown (there's a pizza place nearby that serves vegan cheese, and a Chipotle for a cheap lunch) but it's our restaurant of choice, thanks to good prices for good meals.

Veggie hunan beef (sorry for the poor quality of photo!)
There are other places in DC that serve fake meats, and we've tried a few with mixed success. Unfortunately, Harmony Cafe doesn't deliver, but they will do take-out orders. If you're in the Georgetown area already, it's nice to sit and relax with a meal before planning how you're going to get out of Georgetown (for being part of the District, it's not exactly the most accessible neighborhood...)

Hope you're all enjoying Vegan MoFo!
